When does your season take place?
The MABLL has 3 seasons per
year. Summer (June-August), Fall (September-November) and
Winter (December-February). The MABLL is off during the
traditional spring field season.
Where does the MABLL play?
All MABLL games are played at The BOX Inline Hockey Arena in
Chantilly, Virginia. All games are played on IceCourt surface.
What days of the week are games played?
Games are usually played on Saturdays. This always
works the best as it does not interfere with off-season outdoor
leagues.
How old is the league?
The MABLL
was founded in 1975 by Byron Snyder who was a fan of the Maryland
Arrows of the original National Lacrosse League. The league
began play at the Bowie Ice Rink and moved to the College Park Ice
Arena in 1978. In 1986, long time player Don West moved the
league to Sports Network in Manassas, Virginia. In the fall of 2006,
the league moved to its current home at The BOX. Indoor lacrosse has undergone many changes
over the years and participation has dropped from its height in the late
90's. With the re-emergence of the MABLL and a player-run
league, box lacrosse can once thrives in the DC area.
What are the age requirements?
For the senior divisions, you must be at least 18 years old by the start of the season to play.
The
MABLL Open Division consist of player ranging in age from 18-45 with a wide variety of experiences.
What are the skill or experience requirements?
Individual Players: There are no set requirements for single players but registering does not guarantee you will play in the league. The majority of the players in our league have NCAA or Club experience, which makes for a very competitive atmosphere. If you are a newbie with absolutely no or little skills, the
MABLL is not for you!
Team Requirements: All players submitted as members of the team
core (at least 11 and a goalie) must be experienced and skilled players. All team entries must be approved by the
MABLL before participation. Since the
MABLL is a very competitive league, we request that all team core entries be composed of experienced lacrosse players. The
MABLL reserves the right to reject any team entry based on
inexperience or skill level.
What equipment do I need?
Most standard lax equipment will do the trick but here’s a breakdown of what you need. Stick (no long sticks), lacrosse gloves, athletic cup, arm pads, shoulder pads,
rib and back pads, and helmet with cage or other full face guard. (Lacrosse helmets or ice hockey helmets with full face guards are fine.)
Please visit our Equipment page.
I want to play goalie. What equipment do I need?
Box
lacrosse goalies are equipped similarly to hockey goalie. Full
chest and arm protector, goalie pants, box lacrosse goalie leg
guards, helmet, gloves, cup and a stick. Goalie Pads are provided
for Senior B, Junior and Midget goalies. Visit our Equipment
page for more info.
How do I get on a team if I am new to the
MABLL?
One-way is to sign with a team if you are asked before the season starts.
The second way is to be recruited from the list of FREE AGENTS.
All team entries must have a core
of at least 12 players. If we have enough interest and need a
"NEW" team, we will start a new team based on players
available that have signed up individually.
What are the requirements for entering a team?
Anyone wishing to enter a competitive team into the
MABLL must submit a roster of at least 11 experienced forwards and one goaltender by the designated deadline. All submitted players must have all fees paid and registration forms
completed before the draft date or they will be removed from the
roster. New teams must submit a team logo and colors also by the
designated date. In addition, one player must be designated as the team captain who will be held responsible for the team’s actions,
MABLL team requirements, and all MABLL rulings. Failure to meet all of these requirements will result in the immediate nullification of the team entry
request.
All team entries must be approved by the
MABLL before participation. Since the MABLL is a very competitive league, we request that all team core entries be composed of experienced lacrosse players. The
MABLL reserves the right to reject any team entry based on the lack talent and/or
experience.
Advice: If you need an experienced goalie, contact us and we can help you find one. Many existing teams have more than one goalie and it is easy to find a good goalie in search of more playing time.
Can I come down and play
just to try it without registering?
Yes . . .but only for the end-of-season consolation games.
During the regular season has started, you will have to watch the games like everyone else."
Does the MABLL
use the same rules as the NLL?
NO, the MABLL uses the CLA (Canadian Lacrosse Association) rules
for box lacrosse and modifies them where appropriate. Cheap hits are not tolerated and severely punished."
Fighting is a one-game suspension for the first offense and
suspension for the rest of the season for the second offense.
